Directly out east from St. Abbs Harbour passing Big Green Carr, some 1/3 km offshore is a submarine reef, possibly an extension of the Carr. None of this formation breaks the surface though. The seaward side is a series of terraced rock formations dropping to 30m. This flank of rock contains huge numbers of common long armed squat lobster. It's ideal country for them and common lobster with sandy ledges and holes. This is known because there are many lobster pots and ropes. Care should be exercised to reduce the likelihood of entanglement and under no account should you tamper with any of the working pots. These have been a few altercations between divers and lobster pot men in the past.
The dive starts deep, gradually ascending landwards to around 15m, so perhaps it is the reef end, an extension of the interconnecting ridges further inshore. Nitrox is ideal for this dive site. Deadman's fingers cover the area; large, bulbous and bushy, although some areas have plumose anemone colonies and you may find a spur of rock (possibly after which the dive site is named) which rises to 12m. At this depth surge may be encountered and this is the highest point of the reef, so if you are limited on bottom time it can prove difficult to go anywhere else! Wolfish can be seen and many fish species including wrasse. Again, care should be exercised when launching the delayed SMB to avoid entanglement in the lobster pot lines.
