Scuba Diving in Oban, Scotland, UK, Europe
Dive Site: Calve Island
Location: 56°35.3N; 06°02.1W
Description: Wall dive
Depth: 51 metres max (167 feet)
Visibility: 10 metres (30 feet)
Rating: **** |
There is a lot of marine life covering the steep walls of tiny Calve Island, east of Tobermory harbour. You may encounter a slight current, but not enough to call this dive a drift. Look in the cracks in the rocks for many types of fish including wrasse as well as sea squirts, anemones and sponges. Launch from Tobermory on Mull.
Reader Reviews:
Calve Island is indeed an excellent reef dive. I think the Dive West Scotland book and admiralty chart indicates a vertical sea cliff to 70m. When we dived it last a kelp slope extended down to 15m or so, then the vertical wall started. Aside from the marine species already mentioned, we found some very large common urchins, which were most numerous here, and colourful male cuckoo wrasse all over. The "backside" of the island forms a channel, which contains seals. A hard dayboat runs from Tobermory also.

This is a good dive guide for Calf Island http://www.finstrokes.com/divelinks/malin/Calve_island.html
