Dive Site: Messot Bay
Location: Bodrum, Turkey
Description: Reef / wall
Depth: 6 - 30 metres (20 - 100 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: ***
Messot Bay is a lovely secluded bay with a very small beach, azure blue waters and a small cave or overhang on the eastern side at the surface. The beach does not appear to be accessible from the shore and the calm conditions made this an ideal place to snorkel and explore the rocky coastline from the surface. For our first dive here we dropped below the surface into a shallow bay area with a gently sloping seabed. Heading east across the bay we soon met and followed a rocky wall which cascaded to around 6 metres before a huge seagrass field stretched away into the distance. As we reached the outer part of the bay we dropped into a small canyon at 15m and descended to 30m where a large trawler net had snagged on the rocky wall. Parts of the net are still buoyant making it hang in the water. In part of the netting was a huge sea snail about the size of a human head with a beautiful blue and black speckled underside visible through the netting. We ascended up from the netting to a seagrass ledge at 20m where the volcanic rock formations made interesting shapes and structures. Making our way back across the seagrass field there were red starfish and numerous small urchins amongst the rocks.
