Pemba Scuba Diving
Dive Site: Manta Reef
Location: Pemba, Tanzania
Description: Reef / wall
Depth: 29 metres (95 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: ****
Manta Reef is the dive site that you will often hear about in Pemba as the place to see manta rays. However the cleaning station is very rarely visited by mantas any more because they are caught by local fishermen and sold in markets on Zanzibar. Now if you come across one you can regard yourself as lucky and when we dived here luck was not on our side. That said, it is still a picturesque reef covered in cabbage coral. The reef itself is a moderately step wall that flattens out to sand at about 40m. The top of the reef is a nice place to end your dive as the coral garden is home to may fish, picked out by the rays of sunlight. As soon as we dropped into the water a shoal of big eye trevally swam past. The reef was home huge numbers of reef fish such as lizardfish, large triggerfish, to pufferfish, bigeyes, trumpetfish and pipefish as well as critters such as sea stars and sea cucmbers.
