Pemba Scuba Diving
Dive Site: Emerald Reef
Location: Panza Point, Pemba, Tanzania
Description: Reef / drift
Depth: 29 metres (95 feet)
Visibility: 25 metres (80 feet)
Rating: *****
The most beautiful reef we dived on in Pemba. It starts at 6m and slopes down to about 30m where it flattens out in a sandy plateau before dropping off again. The reef gets its name from the mushroom shaped green algae that grows all over it making it very picturesque. As we entered the water we found ourselves on top of a shoal of at least one hundred giant barracuda, which was an overwhelming experience. Big shoals of wrasse, triggerfish, large parrotfish and unicornfish patrol the reef and fusiliers cover the reef in their thousands. There was also a Napoleon wrasse in the distance. The water clarity here was excellent compared to some of the other dives we did in Pemba, helping to add to the beauty of the reef by allowing the sunlight to pick up the colours in the reef. The drift here was rapid and we covered over 1km in 50 minutes.
