Scuba Diving Truk Lagoon (Chuuk Lagoon), Micronesia
Dive Site: Betty Bomber
Location: Near Ettea, Chuuk Lagoon
Description: Mitsubishi G4M bomber
Length: 20 metres (65 feet)
Depth: Max depth 15 metres (50 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
The Betty Bomber is upright but it is pretty smashed up. The nose is very broken and the engines are a good 50m swim off the starboard front side where they broke away from the plane and travelled forward. The fuselage was full of glassfish and there was lovely soft corals on the wings. In the cockpit there are seats and fire extinguishers and on the outside of the plane there was a radio and another seat.

I dived the Betty Bomber off Truck in 1976. At the time the cockpit and tail were attached. The tail was actually a bit broken from the fuselage, but the rudder was up. I saw on the TV show that aired last month that the machine gun I saw at the time is also missing. I thought all that was protected from scavengers. It's too bad that things are missing off these wrecks now. The authorities need to be more vigilant and protect what is down there.
Also seen here is a (bad) picture of the tail assembly at the time in 76. As you can see the rudder was up and the tail was intact at the time. I took these with a Kodak Pocket camera, remember those?
