Dive Site: HMS Stubborn

Location: Buggiba, 2 miles off of Qawra Point

Description: S-class submarine

Length: 66 metres (213 feet)

Depth: 53 metres max (174 feet)

Visibility: 30 metres + (100 feet)

Rating: *****

The HMS Stubborn was a British s-class submarine commissioned in February 1943. Most of its lifespan was spent in the North Atlantic, but in 1945 it was moved to the Mediterranean. In 1946 the Stubborn was scuttled to be used as a sonar target.

To reach the HMS Stubborn you need to dive from a boat. It makes an excellent dive, but is only a possibility for experienced divers due to the depth at which it lies. As you descend through the blue to the submarine, it soon comes into view (usually at around 25 metres below the surface) as the water is very clear. The wreck is still fully intact, listing slightly to one side. The propellors are still there and you will notice the conning tower with the hatches still open and the six torpedo tubes as you swim around it. Due to its depth, this is a short dive if done using air with decompression stops essential.
