Dive Site: Ahrax Reef
Location: Ahrax Point, Marfa Ridge
Description: Reef
Depth: 11 metres (36 feet)
Visibility: 30 metres (100 feet)
Rating: ****
Getting to this dive site requires a bit of a walk over some spiky rocks, which is a little difficult. The entrance point is at a narrow inlet by a number of caves on the surface. The seascape is lovely with green sea grass swirling in the swells. I just hung around in the shallows enjoying the topography. There were cardinal fish, corals and sponges to see on the dive.

Arhax Reef is at the most northern point of Malta. Perfect scenery, very relaxing, great viz, swishing sea grasses, shoals and shoals of grey chromis, fish, sea urchins, red seastars, blue blue water, swim throughs, very chilled.... wicked dive!

You have to know where this one is. It's a lot easier these days as they've built a campsite there. They've also dumped tons of sand over the sharp rocks and, unfortunately, rubbish which has been a feature of this site for so long. Never mind - the wind will put it back how it was and in the meanwhile you can experience gritty kit. Finding your way into the water, which isn't easy, you'll find a vast area of boring yellow sea grass waving rhythmically and giving you a seasick feel. Not much life to be seen in this area. Then we get to the good bit. If you're lucky you might find yourself in a shoal of several thousand barracuda which don't regard divers as food. Keep swimming for about two hundred metres with the shoreline on your right and eventually you'll come to an entrance about ten metres wide and about the same depth. Swim through and follow the predominantly purple rocks up to a pool about three metres deep and open to the sky. You've found the 'Inland Sea' at L'Ahrax Point. You'll be amazed by the colours. A long swim back but you'll want to do it again!
