Scuba Diving in Costa Rica
Dive Site: El Ancla
Location: Isla del Cano, Costa Rica
Description: Sandy reef with an anchor
Depth: 18 metres (60 feet)
Visibility: 5 metres (15 feet)
Rating: ***
This site is named after the small anchor that lies here. When we dived here the visibility was dreadful. All credit must go to the dive guide who managed to get us to the anchor despite hardly being able to see our hands in front of our faces! The sea was thick with freshwater runoff from the island leading to some very cold patches and lots of leaf matter in the yellow-brown water.
The sandy seabed was home to lots of very big stingrays, some getting up to about 2m across. In some places the stingrays had gone but you could still see the imprints they had left in the sand. Due to the low vis any marine life we saw we only noticed when we were right on top of it, so managed to disturb lots of unsuspecting white tip reef sharks and stumbled across big shoals of grunts. A lot of fun was had making our way from rock to rock without knowing what we'd see next! We've put up some photos so that you can see how bad the vis really was, please excuse them for not being top quality!
