Scuba Diving in Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, Caribbean
Dive Site: El Retorno (the Return)
Location: Punta Frances, Isla de la Juventud, Cuba
Description: Reef
Depth: 14 metres max (46 feet)
Visibility: 20 metres (65 feet)
Rating: *****
A beautiful, shallow reef intersected by parallel, narrow sandy channels. There were so many unusual marine creatures to watch on this dive, beginning with an orange spotted snake eel slithering down a channel. A number of big barracuda were just hanging in wait and lots of tarpon were out hunting. There were also a couple of small shoals of jacks, venturing into the shallows away from the blue for a change. Down one of the channels I went to look at a sleeping nurse shark then spotted a green moray further up. Stingrays flew over the reef itself and one was buried in the sand and if this wasn't enough to keep your attention, there were all the usual reef fish as well including triggerfish, basslets, tangs, trumpetfish and parrotfish going about their business amongst the pretty gorgonians. A fantastic dive with lots to look at.
