Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Magic Point
Location: Just off Maroubra, 15 mins south of Bondi (33°57'27.18"S; 151°15'57.17"E)
Description: Cave and shark dive
Depth:
Visibility: 15 - 25 metres (50 - 82 feet)
Rating: ****
A crescent shaped cave in approx 15m in length 5m in height at a depth of 18m. During winter (May - Aug) visibility will seldom fall below 15m and is often 25m plus - water temp will range from around 20 in May and dropping back to 15 by August. Ambient air temperature is anything from 28 to 20 degrees - there is very little rain during these months so skies are normally crystal clear blue.
I felt pretty nervous as I descended the anchor chain as the skipper had promised me an up close and personal appointment with some resident grey nurse sharks. I was amazed as soon as I got any depth at just how much life there was in the water. A curious big blue grouper seemed to follow us straight away as we swam the 10m or so to the mouth of the "cave" where the sharks hang out. The vis was great and we soon spotted a giant cuttlefish, as I shone my torch on him he changed colour from green through to purple and red - I'm not sure what this behaviour means but he seemed pretty happy to just hang out beside us. Moments later, about 4m away was a 1.5m grey nurse shark, the stuff that I'd got into diving to see. They really look impressive under the water and come pretty close and check you out - I was surprised that I didn't feel scared, just calm and respectful.

I dived Magic Point in 2003 on January the 2nd. It felt quite chilly but was warm outside the water. The vis was really quite low, maybe 5m. A large dark object came into view about 10 minutes into the dive, it was a large sand tiger shark giving us a toothy grin. Quite a spooky sight when you are so close! We saw 2 or 3 other sharks cruising about throughout the dive. Despite the poor vis this was truly a magical dive. Would love to dive it again it better vis. Supposed to be great at night when the sharks are hunting.

Absolutely great, bumped into at least ten grey nurse sharks, marine life is excellent. Saw the biggest cuttle fish I've ever seen at this spot, give it a go.
