Scuba Diving Moreton Island, Brisbane, Australia
Dive Site: Flinders Reef
Location: Moreton Island, near Brisbane, Australia
Description: Reef
Depth: 14 metres max (46 feet)
Visibility: 15 metres (50 feet)
Rating: ***
Flinders Reef is just of Moreton Island near Brisbane and is the only proper reef in the area. It is a shallow reef with an average depth on the landward side of about 7m. Coral outcrops emerge out of a sandy bottom and the reef is home to surprising amount of marine life. We saw a large shoal of barracuda on most dives, turtles, lobster and wobbegong sharks. The best thing we saw was two octopus signalling to each other in some kind of courtship ritual which was really impressive. The topography of the reef is not that interesting and most of the marine life is pretty small so nothing really leaps out at you to make it an outstanding dive site, but equally there's plenty to see.
